The first nurses’ station was founded in Luagala in 1958. Luagala is located on the highest point of the Makonde plateau, about 2 hours drive west of Mtwara.
Many mothers and their children up to 5 years of age come to the UnderFiveClinic in Luagala every day. The children receive medical care and are vaccinated. AIDS orphans and twins receive essential milk powder. The mothers receive information about nutrition, hygiene and AIDS prevention. Last year 394 children were born in Luagala Hospital . People with malaria, burns, animal bites and skin diseases come and seek medical help particularly often.
In the housekeeping school in Luagala, young girls and women learn, among other things, sewing, cooking and housekeeping skills. The girls have recently started taking computer lessons and are learning the English language. The girls sew, among other things, the kindergarten and school uniforms prescribed by the government, which are then passed on to poor children so that they too have access to education.
More than 200 children attend the kindergarten in Luagala. According to Montessori pedagogy, you will learn reading, writing and arithmetic skills in kindergarten.
The religious formation is a major concern of our sisters. The postulants and novices live with the sisters and prepare for community life. The young women who feel called to the religious life experience personal accompaniment in the community and can participate in the community life of the sisters. You will receive an introduction to the charism and spirituality of the congregation. A school education is made possible. Admission to the novitiate and dressing takes place in Luagala.
The sisters and novices visit the sick and poor in their huts to provide them with essentials. They bring wood, water and food and help to maintain the huts.
In addition, around 40 needy and particularly poor people come regularly to the sisters in Luagala and receive food and medical care.
